This fine and important painted blanket chest perfectly demonstrates the exciting kaleidoscope of motion and color of the early nineteenth century. The chest features a lift-top with applied half-round moldings above a deep storage compartment above two long-drawers retaining original brass hardware. The chest is raised on distinctive stylized cutout bracket feet; this same foot is found on numerous other case pieces by noted cabinetmaker-Abiel White. Construction techniques consistent with Abiel White's work further confirm this attribution. This solid attribution and the fantastic original surface elevate the importance and status of this example of New England painted furniture. The blanket chest is in excellent original condition including paint.

The rectangular top with turret front-corners on conforming case with turned front stiles centering the deep well above a pair of short side-by-side drawers retaining original brasses; raised on tall delicate turned legs featuring delicate tapered spike feet.
The height of this piece and its unusual width make it suitable for use as a server, a very difficult object to find in American painted furniture.
