New England Grain Painted Dower chest c. 1830, this fantastic and colorful pattern was created through the application of pigment dissolved in water, turpentine, or vinegar, which was then manipulated while wet using a variety of tools or textured materials such as brushes, combs, lether, or putty. In this example, the artist's hand is literally visible in the repeated pattern of overlapping fans. The technique is traditional, the result unique.

This fine and important painted blanket chest perfectly demonstrates the exciting kaleidoscope of motion and color of the early nineteenth century. The chest features a lift-top with applied half-round moldings above a deep storage compartment above two long-drawers retaining original brass hardware. The chest is raised on distinctive stylized cutout bracket feet; this same foot is found on numerous other case pieces by noted cabinetmaker-Abiel White. Construction techniques consistent with Abiel White's work further confirm this attribution. This solid attribution and the fantastic original surface elevate the importance and status of this example of New England painted furniture. The blanket chest is in excellent original condition including paint.

Abstract decoration...wide sweeping undulating lines centering large dots done with dry brushstrokes of black against an oyster-white ground.
The rectangular lid with applied molding above a conforming case of dovetail construction raised on an applied bracket base also of dovetail construction.
The interior is complete with till having a molded edge; original hinges and paint.

The lid with cleats above dovetailed case fitted with lidded till above a pair of short dovetailed drawers, the case resting on molded applied bracket base.
The faux graining done in bold broad brush-strokes, dry surface; very good paint coverage with some thinning to top. The hinge rail is restored and bracket returns are worn smooth.

A classic New England Federal period fancy painted case of drawers raised on tall cut-out French feet which center a drop panel.
This chest and its surface remain in fine original condition; the brasses replaced within original borings. (Height: 36.5"; width: 41"; depth: 18.5")

The rectangular lid with applied molding above a conforming case; box above drawer raised on cutout base.
Bright brownish/red putty-rolled concentric circles ornament the front panel; full coverage vinegar decoration on all surfaces remains bright and fine.

Unusual and possibly unique decorated lift-top blanket chest above two-drawers constructed.
The rectangular top with turret front-corners on conforming case with turned front stiles centering the deep well above a pair of short side-by-side drawers retaining original brasses; raised on tall delicate turned legs featuring delicate tapered spike feet.
The height of this piece and its unusual width make it suitable for use as a server, a very difficult object to find in American painted furniture.
